About me
I'm Jared Mattson, a web developer and IT generalist based in Victoria, British Columbia.
I built my first websites at 14 and started doing paid web and IT work at 16. For the majority of my career since then, I worked with one company as it grew from NetroMedia into StreamTest and a popular copyright protection service. As its front-end web developer and webmaster, I was responsible for everything web-based: custom video players, pay-per-view sites, online stores and the custom interfaces and apps for the company's management and services. I was also the head of UX, and I regularly coordinated the work of outsourced contractors.
How I work
- Results first. A site should be clear to use, fast to load and reliable. All to serve its dedicated purpose in balance with cost. That matters more to me than clever code.
- The right size of solution. I avoid over-engineering and choose tools that fit the job, from plain HTML, JavaScript and PHP to rich web applications using all the latest frameworks and novel technologies.
- Self-reliant and security-minded. I prefer to host and maintain the tools a project depends on rather than lean on outside services.
- Learning by doing. I pick up whatever a project needs, and I often borrow ideas from one field to solve problems for another.
Today
I run Mattson Tech: a family business offering contract web development, consultation and IT services, together with my wife Jenessa, who leads its marketing and design work.
Outside of client work, I make music, spend quality time with my family and tinker with electronics and all sorts of media technologies.
If you'd like to work together, please Contact me. I look forward to meeting you.
